Magalas is a very old village with shaded alleys that breathe the southern art of living. When Bruno Lafon arrived he was lucky enough to come across remarkable and expressive terroirs – mostly sandstone soils giving aromatic wines with a very fine texture. They have converted this old vineyard to organic farming and the vinification and aging are very classic and very simple.

This is a blend of Grenache and Syrah from two parcels in the Pézenas appellation area. The vines were planted 20+ years ago, on a plot that was just a pile of rocks – a massive undertaking. However, the difficulty of planting in such a place suggests that it has never seen harmful chemical sprays, possibly ever.

Vineyard

2.5 ha on sandstone and silt, sourced from the top of their vineyard. No chemical treatment, the soil is worked gently all year long to avoid accelerating erosion. Harvesting by hand. The site produces flamboyant wines with extremely refined tannins.

Winemaking

A 50/50 blend of Syrah and Grenache are spontaneously co-fermented. Temperature controlled fermentation to encourage a more delicate and expressive profile. The wine subsequently sees one year in used Burgundy oak barrels.

Tasting Note

Beautiful bright ruby. Aromas of red fruits with a trace of blackberry. A beautiful gentle fruit expression on palate with added complexity of warm spices and a light herbaceous character. It’s lush tannins belie a long and refined finish.
